Dr. George Smith (M.D., FAAFP) is Physicians Liaison Officer of Community Health Northwest Florida and has been with the organization since 1994.
Smith attended the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, where he received an MBBS with honors in Community Health. He subsequently did a rotating internship and worked in ambulatory care at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau, Bahamas, before his residency at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. There he was selected as Most Outstanding intern and served as Chief Resident.
He is board certified in Family Medicine and is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was chosen as the 2006 Florida Family Physician of the year by the Florida Academy of Family Physicians. Before coming to Community Health Northwest Florida (nee Escambia Community Clinics), Dr. Smith was a Captain for two years at the 49th Fighter Hospital at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. He is past president of the Florida Academy of Family Physicians and the Escambia County Medical Society.
He currently serves on the Florida State University College of Medicine Community Board for the Pensacola Regional Campus and the Northwest Florida Area Health Education Center Board, of which he is a past president.
Dr. Smith is an Assistant Clinical Professor with the University of Florida and Florida State University and teaches medical students, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. He also is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Florida Academy of Family Physicians, the American Medical Association, the Christian Medical and Dental Association, the Florida Medical Association, and the Escambia County Medical Society.
Dr. Smith has been on medical mission trips to Mexico, Nicaragua, Nepal, Egypt and the Philippines, where he acquired additional skills working with culturally diverse populations.
With more than 30 years of outstanding leadership in the Federally Qualified Health Center setting, Dr. Smith has spent his career caring for the medically needy, vulnerable and culturally diverse populations.
